Moon Pies, $.59 each

People pay money for Moon Pies?? These things are a Gulf Coast Mardi Gras treat, beloved by millions, who presumably have never actually tasted the pasty things, or who have no taste buds. I was surprised to find boxes & boxes of them in the supermarket here in Boston.

On the Gulf Coast during Mardi Gras parades, angry people on parade floats throw these awful things at people in the audience. They can get away with this because they're wearing costumes and masks, and the South has a long tradition of not prosecuting guys in masks.

Anyway, inevitably, the only people that actually try to eat them are children (who don't know any better), newcomers (who also don't know any better), and stoners (who think they're just great, maaaaaaan). By the end of the parade, the ground is littered with hundreds of half-eaten or unopened Moon Pies, and by the Wednesday after, everyone has somehow ended up with a big bag of the things that at best will get foisted off on out of town visitors, but more likely will just end up in the trash.

Then the next February, the cycle will begin again. Fortunately, since they have a Twinkie-like ability to be preserved forever, the company selling them can get away with just reusing leftovers from years past.

Mardi Gras is a weird holiday. I had a lot more fun at Fasnacht in Switzerland, which is basically the same holiday, but with much better music & costumes, and no Moon Pies.
