Montemarcello si trova su un'altura nel cuore del Monte Caprione, a dominio del golfo della Spezia e fa parte del circuito dei borghi più belli d'Italia.
Le sue origini sono dovute alla vittoria del console Marco Claudio Marcello nel 155 a.C. sui Liguri Apuani e da allora la struttura del paese ha conservato l’antica origine romana.
Le mura, di cui oggi restano solo alcuni tratti, lungo Via delle Mura fino all’antica porta d’entrata del paese, furono costruite nel 1485. Nel 1944 subì un bombardamento tedesco che portò alla creazione di piazza XIII Dicembre.
Nel borgo si trova la chiesa di San Pietro, del XV secolo, con un prezioso trittico del XVI secolo, profondamente ristrutturata in stile barocco nel XVII secolo.
Dal 1985 il paese è al centro del Parco Regionale di Montemarcello Magra, con il vicino Orto Botanico.

Montemarcello is located on a hill in the heart of Monte Caprione, dominating the gulf of La Spezia and is part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
In 155 B.C. its origins are due to the victory of the consul Marco Claudio Marcello in 155 BC. on the Ligurian Apuan Alps and since then the structure of the town has kept its ancient Roman origins.
The walls, of which only a few sections remain today, along Via delle Mura up to the ancient entrance gate of the town, were built in 1485. In 1944 it underwent a German bombing which led to the creation of Piazza XIII December.
In the village there is the church of San Pietro, from the 15th century, with a precious triptych from the 16th century, profoundly restructured in Baroque style in the 17th century.
Since 1985, the town has been at the center of the Montemarcello Magra Regional Park, with the nearby Botanical Garden.
