Loosdrechtse Plassen, vanmiddag

Wonderful skating this afternoon on the Loosdrechtse Plassen, a series of vast shallow ponds to the southeast of Amsterdam which came into being because of extensive peat-digging activities in past centuries.

The sky today was completely socked in until around 3pm, when the sun finally broke through. I did a circuit of around three hours; towards the end it got so dark I only managed to find my way back to where I left my shoes by means of a headlamp I had with me.

It seems we get a winter like this only once every dozen or so years.
