2.365.325: A Jubilating Battle Royale
It seems every year the Holiday Seasonal Ales come out earlier and earlier. I was particularly excited when I saw Deschutes’ Jubelale had been released. It just so happens I have some Hey Jube! at home. The Jubelale is what inspired me to create the Hey Jube! Jubilation Ale recipe a few years ago, specifically so I can enjoy it in the spring and summer.
I just couldn’t pass up the rare opportunity to taste them side by side. Very exciting!!!
How did the Hey Jube! compare? I was stoked to see the colors were very similar, mine appearing slightly lighter. Overall body, Deschutes wins on that front. Think it’s more because the Hey Jube! fermented and spent the first part of its conditioning in above ideal temperatures (we had a head wave right after I boiled the Hey Jube!). Flavoring, the Jubelale isn’t as bold as mine. The Hey Jube! has more of a distinct “smoky” undertone to it. This characteristic in the Jubelale is what caught my eye, and seems to be less prominent w/ each passing year. Also, the Hey Jube!’s IBU is noticeably higher…& I love hoppy goodness.
End result is I enjoyed them both immensely, and had a fun & educational beer night.
