Peru - Humantay Lake daytrip
Perhaps because this was the third ascent in three days (after Huayna Picchu and Rainbow Mountain), perhaps because of the altitutude, or perhaps because I was simply embarrrassingly out of shape, but I rode a horse part way up the slope to the lake.
The lake / lagoon is located between the Salkantay Peak and the Humantay Mountain. The closest village to the Humantay lake is the village of Soraypampa (ca 120 kilometers from Cusco), where there were opportuniies to grab snacks and water and in my case lunch after my descent.
From the trailhead at Soraypampa (ca 3800m altitude), I was told it was a 1.5 to 2-hour walk to the lake (I took a horse part way), a gain of only 350-375 m, but that morning I was feeling every metre of altitude when I started walking.
