Paper Bark - Carole Grogloth, Molokai Hawaii

The paper bark tree, also known as melaleuca quinquenervia, is native to the South Pacific (Australia, New Caledonia, and Papua New Guinea). It can survive such extreme conditions such as fires and seasonal waterlogging. Its flowers serve as a rich source of nectar for creatures such as bats, insects, and birds. The paperbark tree, introduced to Hawaii for ornament and watershed cover, is easily recognized by its odd whitish bark, which splits and peels in many papery layers, by the lance-shaped or narrowly elliptical leaves with mostly five veins from base to apex, and many white flowers with many threadlike stamens, crowded and stalkless, suggesting a bottlebrush.
