SMA Bit (10 August 2022)

"Zeferino Gutiérrez, an indigenous stonemason [...] designed the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel we see today. He was inspired by a postcard of the neo-Gothic-style church in Cologne, Germany, which he guarded fiercely in his house.

It was built over a period of ten years, during which time pink sandstone was extracted from the slopes of the extinct Palo Huérfano volcano to create the masterpiece. In spite of the criticisms launched against the artist for having built a neo-Gothic building, breaking away from the colonial style of the city, the church was inaugurated in 1890." www.visitmexico.com/en/guanajuato/san-miguel-de-allende/c...
