Bioluminescence under the stars.

Taken in March, after procrastinating because i was really tired and wanted to go to bed but people kept talking about this strange occurrence that was STILL happening at 11pm......so i dragged my tired butt out of bed and grabbed my camera and in true Susan fashion, i did not remember my tripod...so i had to try to not breathe while i was standing on the beach in the pitch black trying to capture this phenomenon. It was positively fascinating, utterly mesmerizing and it does not happen all that often. It can last for mere minutes or hours or days and depends on how the currents are driven and for how long. It can be blue, green, yellow or red....and if you walk in the sand where the tide flows in and out, you can leave glowing footprints! Each time a wave crashes it glows more brightly!
i was pretty happy to get any photos that were not a total blur, standing out there in the cool night air with no tripod! It pays to be able to hold your breath and BECOME the tripod!!
Oh....they are little bioluminescent plankton that do the glowing! i think it is magic, pure and simple!
