Tree of Life, Olympic National Park - Color

This astonishing Sitka spruce defies nature in Olympic National Park along Washington's coast where it hangs in mid air, suspended on either side by roots that appear to be barely holding on. Its seemingly impossible living arrangements are the result of erosion caused by a stream that has carved a cave beneath the tree's roots where it flows onto the beach. It's popularly referred to as the Tree of Life and while I assume that name comes from its dramatic appearance, its precarious situation seems to more aptly deserve that name. The constant erosion from the stream that flows beneath it combined with the vigorous west coast surf threatens it's existence daily, so I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to see it before it is claimed by the elements.
