3,200 megapixel array

Suzanne Jacoby holds a mockup showing the dimensions of the image sensor planned for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. An image of the moon is pasted overtop to illustrate the wide field of view encompassed by each exposure. In the design as currently planned, individual 16 megapixel CCD chips are butted together into a non-rectangular sensor matching the image circle of the telescope optics.
