Soun Nary

Soun Nary receives a follow-up visit from her Cambodia Trust community worker.

Nary, age 15, caught polio when she was a child, which affected both legs. She is paralysed from the waist down. The Cambodia Trust community team provided a ramp at her local primary school, Kro Lang. The Trust also provided a wheelchair, school uniform and materials to enable Nary to attend lessons.

At 15, she is several years older than the rest of her classmates who average 8-10 years old. This is often the case for disabled children who are excluded from school. When they do get the opportunity to get an education, they are years behind their peers and need to catch up before they can join students of their own age.

Before Nary was identified by a Cambodia Trust community worker, she didn't attend school and had to crawl everywhere. Now, with her wheelchair, she is more mobile and able to play a part in her community.
