Jinriksha Station (Former)

Jinriksha Station was built in 1903 to ease the load of the station at Middle Road. It served as the central depot for Singapore's rickshaws. A central depot was required as the number of rickshaws in Singapore numbered up to 9000 in 1919.

Jinriksha is the Japanese term for rickshaws and it was invented in Japan in 1869 but only introduced to Singapore in 1880. It soon became the most popular and cheapest mode of transport. Owners of rickshaws came primarily from Fuzhou or Canton and rented them out to pullers. As the transportation system in Singapore became more advanced, the rickshaw gradually lost its lustre and the number of rickshaw pullers and rickshaws decreased.

The introduction of the trishaw in Singapore was the death knell for the rickshaw as the trishaw replaced the rickshaw. As the rickshaw trade died, the station also became disused. The Station is no longer in operation and the building has been occupied by offices and pubs. (guidegecko)
