workbench
This would be a poor (zire71) snapshot of my workbench. It's basically a 30x96x4 torsion box top on a modified trestle base with dog holes, a tail vise, and a double screw face vise.
The stand is an open trestle base full of compound angles that makes it completely rack proof, which is real nice for handplane use.
Everything, except the tail vise screw, is built from whatever stuff I could find at Home Depot. The stand is 2x6 and 2x4 lumber, the top is particle board and 2x3 ribs, the dog holes are in 1x and 2x pine, the top is wrapped with pine scraps.
The face vise is built from 1/2" threaded rod, extension nuts, 1/4" rods and 1x4 maple. It's not the sturdiest, but it'll hold a 16" wide panel between the screws.
Total cost for the whole bench was maybe $100 (CDN) and a couple weekends of work. I built it about 5 years ago and don't regret a thing about it, but it's certainly no fine piece of furniture.
Next bench will be hardwood (probably maple) with a shaker-style enclosed base for weight and storage. I might replace the base before rebuilding the top, however.
