Dorset, Milton Abbas Almshouses

I took some photos of this almshouse last year on our holiday, but not of the whole thing, so this year, we went back.

Milton Abbas was a planned village, built in about 1780 when the old town of Middleton was disturbing the view of the owner of Milton Abbey. There are 36 almost identical thatched cottages, plus these almshouses. The part in the middle of the building (under the triangular pediment) was the village Reading Room, now used as a village hall.

The almshouses were originally built in Middleton in 1674 and re-erected here in 1779. The walls are of brick and flint banding with stone dressings.
