Pigeon Point

Drive south from San Francisco along the coast and you'll eventually find the old lighthouse at Pigeon Point. This old beauty, built in 1871, is perched on a craggy point overlooking a choppy spot of surf. On the south side of the point you can check out Smuggler's Cove, a rocky little half-moon inlet where the smugglers used to pop in with rum shipments headed to San Francisco during the Prohibition Era. There were no rum smugglers to be found on this day but there were plenty of Gray Whales around. The whales were heavily engaged in their annual northward pilgrimage. There was a pod of about 150 of them (according to the docents) spouting, breeching, and generally having a great old time doing all those things that whales do. Sorry, no pictures of that spectacle-they were a little far out for the lens I was carrying and anyway, I just wanted to watch the show. Instead, here's a shot of the old lighthouse for you to enjoy with your rum. Remember to drink responsibly. :-)
