The Heavy Talk

Every once in a while you get called on to have "the heavy talk." Usually, the heavy talk takes place with a good friend or family member. I remember one of mine well.

My grandfather, at 90 years old, suffered a minor stroke while driving and crashed his car into a ditch. I visited him in the hospital, and the "heavy talk" suddenly was upon me. It went like this,

"Hi grandpa. How you feeling?"

"I'm feeling okay Dave, but I have a huge decision to make."

I'm thinking, oh no, maybe he's considering checking into a rest home or something, so I say, "What's up Grandpa? Maybe I can help."

He looks at me, then looks out the window and matter of factly says, "I gotta decide if I'm going to buy new or used."

And there it was--the heavy talk--telling my grandpa that his driving days were over, which is a big loss of independence for an elderly person. He never drove again--luckily for all parties concerned. The entire family thanked me. Honestly the guy scared the bejesus out of me whenever I rode shotgun with him.
