Quinault Rain Forest Vignette

A small creek cascades over rocks and fallen trees within the Quinault Rain Forest. Fallen trees are a common sight in the rain forest environment. The abundance of surface water negates the need for tap roots causing the roots to grow close to the surface. Without a deep root system the trees can easily topple during periods of high wind. I saw one spot where over a hundred trees had toppled like dominoes, one after the other. The good news is, there seems to be more trees here than there are insects on earth. I honestly have never seen an area this dense with trees.
