Finding the Still Spot in the Turmoil
In 1994 I attended a business symposium on how to create a learning organization. Peter Senge had just published a book called "The Learning Organization" and it was all the rage within the Human Resource (HR) and Organizational Development (OD) communities. I remember sitting next to an OD specialist during lunch. She worked for a firm called Silicon Graphics (SGI). SGI was riding the wave, having developed a 3D graphics computer that was being used in all the hottest animated movies. She told me that SGI had a "create a crisis" process that upper management would invoke when they felt things were getting complacent. I remember thinking, "that's odd. Don't people suffer enough stress in the workplace without having to create more." SGI went belly-up in 1997.
I only think of this because I've been involved in a crisis of my own lately and I can tell you that I would not appreciate people trying to create more crisis in my life, just to give me a little edge. At the moment I'm trying to find the eye of the hurricane--the still spot in the turmoil.
I'm currently on a bit of a roller coaster ride. Just when I think things are improving I discover a new twist in the plot. I'm doing the best I can to take each day one at a time. Hope all of you are doing well. You're sure posting some awesome pictures.
