Male Lion, Panthera leo melanochaita, SH 1.2 m. / 3.94 ft. The largest of the African cats, they have been eradicated from much of their previous range of grassy plains and savannas, scrub bordering rivers and open woodland with bushes. Second largest felid, after the Tiger, P. l. melanochaita, survive today among scattered populations in sub-Saharan Africa.
The male was a late arrival to the feast. Several female lions with bulging bellies are sleeping on the ground around their kill, a Buffalo, Syncerus caffer.
