Dreaming of Adventure under the Milky Way
A self-portrait standing on the tombolo island under the night sky and the Milky Way. Cook County, Minnesota.
Last night, the sky was crystal clear and midnight black. I've had this picture idea for awhile and knew that the Milky Way this time of year would be in the perfect position to make it happen, so I went to the tombolo.
After taking my normal nightscape shots, I decided to do a self-portrait standing on the tombolo island under the night sky and the Milky Way. This island is on the Superior Hiking Trail, and it's one of my favorite places to photograph. I love putting myself into pictures and in this case I think it really emphasizes how small we really are when compared to the the stars in our own galaxy, let alone the universe. When looking at all those stars, I have to believe that we're not alone in the universe. There's probably something/someone just like me out there looking back and thinking the same thing - someone who constantly dreams of adventures and someone who doesn't fit well into society's cogs.
I like the symbolism in this photo. The small silhouetted island stands out among the sea of stars and the Milky Way. It seems a fitting metaphor for earth. You can see the version without me standing in it on my website.
