Former Ross Elementary School
One of 49 Chicago public elementary schools closed in 2015. Located at 6059 S. Wabash Ave., it is right around the corner from where my grandparents lived on the northeast corner of E. 61st St. and S. Michigan Ave. The church in the right background is St. Anselm's of Studs Lonigan fame. Ross was built after the family moved to South Shore in the early 1920s. My uncle Adolph started school at Carter Elementary at 5740 S. Michigan Ave. around 1917.
NOTE: Ross is one of 22 CPS properties up for auction at the end of May 2025. Beginning bid is $100,000.
