Gasthaus Aescher-Wildkirchli
Everyone in Switzerland – or at least in Appenzell – knows it: The Aescher. At an altitude of 1454 m above sea level, clinging beneath a 100 m high overhanging rock wall – it is one of the most spectacular guest houses in Switzerland – perhaps even in the World.
This is probably why the authors of National Geographic printed the Aescher on the cover of their new book Places of a Lifetime.
The hermits and herdsmen began to sell food and drink on Aescher as far back as 1800. During the early 19th century, the mountain chalet gradually evolved into Gasthaus Aescher, one of the oldest mountain inns in Switzerland.
The easiest way to get there is taking the cable car in Wasserauen up to Ebenalp. From there it's only a 20 minutes walk to the Aescher. If you like to start at the bottom of the valley and walk up on your own that's also possible within two hours.
