Fake Fishies

November 1, 2018

Homemade fishing "flies" meant to fake out local saltwater game fish. (Striped Bass, Bluefish, Bonito, and False Albacore, among others.)

They mimic a small bait fish called a "sand lance" or "sand eel" that lives on the shallow sand flats as well as deep ocean banks. They have pointy noses and when threatened race straight down to the sandy ocean floor, burying themselves until the danger has passed.

These imitations have weighted eyes allowing the fisherman to pause momentarily while stripping in line, allowing the lure to drop down similar to the real thing.

With November here, most of the fish have gone south for the winter, and it's time to make more "flies."
