Making an Escape

May 20, 2018

(Americorchestia)

A big-eyed sand flea, or beach hopper or sand hopper, or beach flea or whatever you like to call them...

These are shots of our local blue-eyed, big-eyed beach hoppers. They like damp sand and if you are digging a hole on the beach, you are likely to come across one or two. They also like it under piles of seaweed or driftwood logs. (Anywhere the sun can't dry them or their sand burrows out!!)

These ones are only a little over a centimeter long. When disturbed they frantically hop and scurry like crazed fleas. Their "cross-eyed" blue "googly eyes" help to give them that frantic crazed look.

...oh... and these creatures don't bite!
