i very very very very seldomly (read that as 'never') find myself in the right place at the right time when i'm schlepping the hassy along on a shoot. until saturday 31st august (somewhere in the afternoon) that is ...

the man in the photo is, 76-year-old, two-time 24h of le mans winner gijs van lennep. he, together with his co-driver helmut marko won the endurance race back in 1971, setting a distance record that would last till 2010. what's even more impressive is, that they did it in a porsche 917, one of the most iconic/brutal sportscars ever. he won the race again in 1976, together with jacky ickx. after that race gijs van lennep retired from motorsport at the age of 34. for motor racing fans like myself, this man is a legend.

i stumbled upon mr. van lennep in the zandvoort paddock giving an interview, sitting on a straw bale. took one photo, saw it was the last one on that film roll, cursed out loud, tried to load another film as quickly as possible, to then see the interview was over and mr. van lennep was walking away. more loud cursing.

but then one minute later, he climbs aboard a porsche 908/3 and the best thing was, hardly anybody saw it or came over to have a look. so, standing right in front of the car i shot an entire film roll of the scene. people around now took notice and soon i had a mob breathing down my neck.

this one is the first i processed. got maybe three or four more, which are equally decent. after i finished the roll, he looked straight at me, i gave him the thumbs up, he smiled and gave me the thumbs up back. made my weekend.

i'm 100% sure i will not take a more satisfying image in my entire life.
