Triptych of the Virgin and Child against a 16th century tapestry that once belonged to Cardinal Wolsey
A triptych showing the Virgin and Child is seen against the impressive backdrop of a 16th century tapestry that once belonged to Henry VIII’s close friend and advisor Cardinal Wolsey. The tapestry known as The Triumph of Time over Fame (c.1515-20) was last displayed 16 years ago.
By 1500, tapestries had become particularly popular in northern Europe among the nobility as a moveable means of furnishing. Wolsey amassed a collection of more than 600, using them to furnish his properties, which included Hampton Court Palace. Wolsey rose through the ranks to become Henry VIII’s chief advisor, but famously fell from power in 1529 when he failed to secure an annulment of the king’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon. He was subsequently stripped of his government office and his property and possessions were taken by the King.
The Northern Renaissance: Dürer to Holbein is at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace from 2 November 2012 until 14 April 2013.
