The first Class 56 naming, 56 038 'Western Mail' at Cardiff Central, June 2nd 1981

On June 2nd 1981, the first Class 56 naming ceremony took place. 56 038, was named 'Western Mail', after the Newspaper.

After the ceremony, she'd work 1O79, the 1205 Cardiff Central - Portsmouth Harbour as far as Bristol Temple Meads. The trip was quite lively, I still have audio from this run.

The paint job wasn't a complete repaint, witness the jaded blue on the roof - and the discoloured Overhead Warning sign behind the cab door. Can anyone identify any of the people there?...

56 038 was built at Doncaster, entering service in February 1978. She was sent to France between October 7th 2004 - December 27th 2006, when she was withdrawn.

She was converted to 69 008, and is in service with GBRf.
