Mang Charlie and Aling Conchita
An old woman with a crooked back and a skinny man. What I thought was an old couple turned out to be a mother and son, Charlie Gorayon and Conchita Gonzales, asking for help from passersby along ADB Ave. and Opal Rd., Ortigas Center, Pasig City.
I chanced upon them sitting on a flowerpot in front of RCBC. I sat around for a while before going to work.
Mang Charlie would ask yuppies and workers for funds to buy an inhaler (commonly known as Ventolin) for Aling Conchita who is asthmatic.
They hail from San Pedro, Laguna and stays in a Sogo Apartelle on a daily basis.
In the middle of chitchatting, Aling Conchita muttered, “O, bagay naman sa’yo e (Hey, it looks good on you),” pointing at the back of my hair. It connected how, as Mang Charlie related, Aling Conchita went missing and was found in Bacoor, Cavite — she’s already senile.
Our conversation concluded with handshake thank you for your time and a smile.
