DR. MILLEY'S HOSPITAL, LICHFIELD

The almshouse in Lichfield now known as Dr.Milley's Hospital (fn. 1) seems to have been founded onproperty given by Bishop Heyworth in 1424 for theuse of the poor. (fn. 2) The bishop's grant makes nomention of the foundation of a hospital, but twocircumstances suggest that Dr. Milley's Hospitaldid originate in the bishop's benefaction and that itwas therefore founded about 1424. First, Heyworthgave the property to the cathedral sacrist and themaster of St. Mary's Guild, and until recent yearsthe sacrist has always had a special responsibility forDr. Milley's Hospital. (fn. 3) Secondly, the property onwhich the hospital now stands — a long narrowpiece of land running back from Beacon Street andcurving south to the Leamonsley Brook (fn. 4) — isalmost certainly that which Heyworth gave in 1424.The ground seems once to have been a ditch whichformed the town defences between the north-westcorner of the fortified Close and the bishop'sfishponds. (fn. 5) The ground floor of Dr. Milley'sHospital is now well below the level of BeaconStreet, and this is undoubtedly due in part to itssituation in the town ditch.
