Just outside the built-up area of Uithoorn, where the Amstel River flows into the Drecht, lies in a rural area one of the more than thirty forts (1911) that once formed the Defence Line of Amsterdam .

For decades now, the area around the fort has been the domain of the flora and fauna of the Dutch polder, owned by the municipality of Uithoorn and de Kwakel and managed by a foundation, which is managed and supported by volunteers. The fort is in excellent condition and many details are still in their original state. The proceeds from the rents that are paid, are 100% spent back on the maintenance of the Fort. This Fort is one of the most beautiful of the Defence Line of Amsterdam in terms of maintenance. Partly due to its inclusion in tourist routes, the Fort has enjoyed increasing interest from the public, young and old. A beautiful area for walkers, cyclists and a beautiful place to moor a boat. The Fort aan de Drecht is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
