NZ Dotterel Opito Bay New Zealand 2015 - North Island subspecies
AKA the New Zealand Plover, Tuturiwhatu. These charming birds are endemic to New Zealand and endangered (c2500 pairs) but a pioneering effort has given them hope. They have been placed as an icon of conservation in the country so that local communities have taken responsibility and ownership to reduce disturbance at their breeding grounds ie the sand dunes of North Island.
