In 1543 work began on the house. The Tudor Tower on the east front dates from this period. The house contains an astonishing collection of art work, including the largest known van Dyke group portrait (of the 4th Earl and his family) and Rembrandt's Mother and has the added distinction of having had most of the state rooms designed by Inigo Jones, thought to be the first significant English architect
