The Gervis Arcade, now known as Bournemouth Arcade, that links Old Christchurch Rd and Gervis Place was built by Henry Joy.. When it was constructed it was known as Joy's Folly as it had replaced a footbridge made from rustic wooden poles that spanned a picturesque ravine called Church Glen, which was a beauty spot much admired by locals and visitors alike.

A small stream ran along the bottom of the ravine, which was 20 feet deep, the sides of which were covered in a host of wild plants and flowers. The bridge was opened in 1853 and there was a small toll to pay to use it.

Work began on the arcade in 1866, and when it first opened it was minus it's glazed roof which wasn't added until 1872.

The arcade remains a popular shopping destination in 2013.

It is grade II listed although many of the finer architectural touches have been lost over the years.
