2025.02.22.5047.Z7II Esau Kicking Up Dust

Esau, a 33-year-old ascendant super-tusker in Amboseli National Park in Kenya, continues feeding on grass in gathering gloom after sunset. Dust rises as he kicks up divots of grass; he will use his trunk to separate the grass from the dirtt before putting the grass in his mouth. He does this to keep the abrasive dirt from prematurely grinding down his molars and aging him too soon. Esau, who needs 300 or more pounds of food a day, will graze through the night. He only needs a couple of hours of sleep, which he will take standing. ©2025 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com
