2022.09.12.5813.Z7ii Male Gerenuk Feeding

This male gerenuk shows why this species also is called the "antelope camel," the antelope that thinks it's a camel. Its name, in fact, in Somali, means "camel-necked," and its light upper body provides him with the stamina he needs to feed upright while his strong lower body allows him the run with antelope speed when he needs to. The gerenuk gets its moisture from what it eats and can go its whole life without drinking water. This gerenuk lives in the Samburu National Reserve iin northern Kenya. ©2022 John M.
