Black Saturday +day23 update latest news

Fire victims' relief crisis, Selma Milovanovic, The Age Newspaper.

"... HUNDREDS of residents in fire-devastated Kinglake and Kinglake West have been denied food aid and told to support local businesses, as drinking water remains unavailable in the communities, sparking an outbreak of gastroenteritis.

The Murrindindi Council is encouraging locals to shop at the few remaining food outlets and "return to normal" as relief centres shut and local and state authorities wrangle over responsibility for providing clean water. ..."

SNAFU and Aid fatigue

I'm not surprised. I don't think its directly related to incompetence, more the scale. As I've shown previously the scale of the fire area is large. It covers an area where people are decentralised. If you do not have regular access to vehicles you miss out. If you are suffering PTSD you miss out. This shouldn't come as any surprise for relief organisations like the Red Cross, The Salvo's or the Army. But local shire councils?

I really have to question the ability for shire councils to be able to handle this disaster zone. I also would be curious why ARMY help was stopped when their ability to get basics like food, water and medical services 24/7 is business as usual.

Don't sit back and wait

This is also the reason we (brother, sister, "K", "J", mum and others) have made sure power, water and other basics are up and running in as little as 2 to 18 days. My Dad is very fortunate. His house, car is intact. He has access to good supplies of bore drinking water, power and food. It's also a pain that legal barriers have delayed this effort.

History repeats

I'm proud the locals aren't taking any BS from lame excuses being given out by OIC's. Once again it's timely news from the people on the ground that is important. I've seen this kind of aid fatigue before. Case in point, one mate who lost his house across the hill when I was a kid. I was told many years later the "instant relief of blankets, food and clothes" eventually dried up leaving them to re-build a house without much aid and support. History repeats.
