Found a Jakob Nielsen article (2D is Better Than 3D) that explains why this type of user interface is difficult for users. For example, this image, 2006APR251356 would possibly unsuitable

 

Those apple developers (ichat) are pretty good. The centre image shows how to display many video images at once by arranging them like you would photos on a desk.

 

Its a nice hack to solve the problem of viewing many feeds in a small area.
