Helix pomatia, the European edible snail, introduced by the Romans to England, where it's a protected creature (info).

 

Quite often encountered on chalky Cotswold terrain, we gently re-located this one well away from the public path. There's plenty of wild garlic in the woods nearby, and you wouldn't want people to get ideas ;-)
