Nieuport 17 - French WW1 fighter plane
An extremely successful aircraft on account of its high speed and excellent manoeuvrability. Entering service in 1916, more than 3,500 were built. This replica dates from 1997 owned by John Gilbert and part of The Great War Display Team.
Technically a 'sesquiplane' (one and a half wings) rather than a biplane, the lower wing has a much smaller area than the upper. Seen here taking off from Old Warden.
