Spitfire comin' at you!

Pilot John Romain is clearly visible through the windscreen of this powerful Spitfire Mk XIV, serial RN201.

Capable of over 400mph in level flight, this Griffon engined mark of Spitfire, described as 'a hairy beast' to fly, could climb almost vertically and gave many enemy pilots the shock of their lives, having thought they'd bounced a Spit from above.

This particular machine is painted to represent one that took part in an air race in 1947. Seen here, away from its Duxford base, over Old Warden.
