DH.88 Comet in a dive. Pilot, Roger 'Dodge' Bailey.

This wooden wonder is doing quite well for 90!

The de Havilland Comet was built to take part in the 1934 England to Melbourne 'MacRobertson' Air Race. Prize money of £15,000 (equivalent to almost £1 million in 2024) was donated by confectionary manufacturer and philanthropist, Sir Macpherson Robertson.

This Comet won the race, flown by pilots Scott and Black in a record time of only 3 days.

Sadly for de Havilland, the design wasn't a commercial success, only a handful were ever built. The plane that came second in the race, a Douglas DC-2, however, eventually became one of the world's most successful ever aircraft designs. The race is not always to the swift...

The Comet is owned and operated by the Shuttleworth Collection, and seen here displaying over its base at Old Warden.
