B17G Flying Fortress 'Sally B'

The chequered engine cowling is painted in memory of Ted White, who bought this aircraft in the late 1970s to restore it for display. He was sadly killed flying another aircraft, which had chequered decoration. Ted's partner, Elly Sallingboe took on the challenge of returning this old bomber (which Ted had named 'Sally B' for her) to display condition, and her team has kept it flying, funded by public donations, since the early 1980s.
Based at Duxford in Cambridgeshire, 'Sally B' is a regular performer at airshows all across Europe, being the only airworthy B17 outside of North America.
With her chin turret temporarily removed, Sally B played the role of the 'Memphis Belle', a B17 bomber that famously completed 25 missions during WW2, in the 1990 movie of that name.
