Miles Hawk Speed 6

Pilot Frank Chapman gave us a superb display in this 1935 racing aircraft.

This plane was built for Louis Fontés, a colourful character of the day, to take part in the 1935 King's Cup Air Race. Fontés was a British racing car driver of Brazilian descent. As well as winning the 1935 Le Mans 24 hour car race, he had served time in jail for manslaughter and was also involved in powerboat racing. He was killed in an air crash in 1940 whilst serving in the RAF Air Transport Auxiliary. As I said, a colourful character.

This plane still has its original de Havilland Gypsy Major engine and has been raced and flown regularly for the last 90 years.
