Sleighs on Main Street
Main street Bodie U.S.A., wide by but covered by grass. Why a sleigh? Twenty-foot snow drifts were not uncommon in the 1859 mining town. The "bad man" from Bodie during the Winter was just trying to stay alive.
It is gruesome, but the man the town was named after did not survive his first Winter. He with his partner on returning with supplies got separated during a blizzard. Waterman S. Bodey was found in the Spring with his head split open. Some thought he was killed by his partner. After an investigation, his partner was exonerated and the death was called an accident, he froze to death. His head was split by the cold weather when he froze.
The town was named after him, but somebody misspelled his name, Bodie. The town did not boom until the 1870s
