VIA Rail old Belleville station, last day of service._6122
Thomas Brassey's architectural gem, the Belleville passenger train station opened in 1856 and served for 156 years making it the oldest rail passenger station in continuous service in Canada. But today is its last day. On March 20, 2012 at 6:14 a.m., VIA Rail trains will call at the new passenger station immediately to the east of the old one. It had to be. The current station is far too small for today's passenger traffic. Inside, it is standing room only in non air conditioned space as two trains will arrive and depart in opposite directions within 15 minutes. The old station is a National Historic Site of Canada and will be preserved but its new role has not been announced.
