Belleville VIA Rail Station

Belleville VIA Rail station in the golden light of late afternoon. A National Historic Site of Canada, it was built in 1856 by Thomas Brassey for Canadian National predecessor Grand Trunk Railway. This is the oldest continuously operating passenger train station in Canada. There is a station of similar age in Port Hope, Ontario but it was decommissioned for many years before being restored as an operating station. This station will be decommissioned sometime in 2011 as VIA Rail is building a larger station. With the amount of traffic these days the station has inadequate waiting space in winter when outdoor waiting is not an option and access to the second platform is considered unsafe . As a National Historic Site, the building cannot be altered or expanded. It will remain although, in what capacity, is still to be determined.
