Dan and Mike Matthews
The last day of AvCon ... it had been a busy weekend so far and most of us were getting pretty tired by this point ~ especially those who took in Zach Bennett's band "Yonder" the night before [I'm sure someone will share their pictures!]. We watched a BTS dvd that Sullivan Entertainment had donated to the auction that was held later in the day and then had a leisurely lunch before the auction began. Bobby "Malcolm McEwan" Naranjo behaved himself this year and actually let others bid ... and win! ... a few of the auction items. We still came away with a pinafore worn by Sarah Polley, a complete set of RTA books, a gorgeous tote bag filled with books and goodies donated by Amber Smiley and Auntie Janet, not to mention a set of note cards with photos of PEI taken by our own Auntie Janet ... and several other items. Mike Matthews agreed again this year to be our auctioneer and once again did a superb job. The highlight of the auction, though, has to go to his son, Dan. An AvCon mug was up for auction with signatures from Zach Bennett, Mag Ruffman and John Welsman. As Mike was trying to get a few more bids on this item, Dan somehow let the mug slip from his grasp where it smashed on the hard floor. This was one of those moments that seemed to take forever but actually happened in a split second and no one was able to take a picture. Bobby was the high bidder at $5 before the mug broke ... somehow the broken mug was worth double the amount and he was able to buy it for $10. Go figure! :) But all of the auction proceeds go to charity and Mike always makes this a fun event so he didn't mind.
