Time Wars Book 2: Stranger Than Fiction, Chapter 1: A Wrinkle In Spacetime Part 34

He is Spock of Vulcan, a man who is now without a world, without any sort of a tangible past - or so he believes!

He has spent the last several months directing the pitiful survivors of Vulcan's destruction in re-making this world in their image. It has not been an easy task, for his people, what is left of them, were long out of the practice of colonizing new worlds.

They left their colonial ambitions behind when they embraced logic as a way of life. With the proper application of logic to every aspect of Vulcan life, there was little need to set up new colonies on distant worlds. Logical management of Vulcan's resources and population provided them with all they needed. The few already existing Vulcan colonies remained, but no new ones were created aside from a few small research outposts scattered around inhospitable corners of the galaxy.

In retrospect, this was a huge mistake. Not only did it mean that most of the Vulcan race was concentrated on their homeworld when it was annihilated, but that they are also long out of practice with the skills and attitude necessary to tame a wild new world.

Spock reflects that there is also something else they have lost that few Vulcans would dare speak of publicly: a lack of what the humans would call a "pioneering spirit" which would undoubtedly prove useful in their current predicament!
