8 Skeins of Danger!
Well, actually it's called "8 Ropes of Danger" but same difference!
The parts from this GI Joe set have been around in form or another since 1965 as the "Deep Sea Diver" set but did not feature an octopuss , treasure coins, map or treasure chest at that time since GI Joe was strictly military themed then. Instead it came with a compass, marker buoy, rope and sledgehammer.
By 1969 it had been renamed 8 Ropes of Danger and the octopuss , coins, treasure map and chest had been added but the sledgehammer seems to have disappeared. This set wopuld continue on into the Adventure Team line in 1970 unchanged and elements from it would see odd variations such as 1973's "Mystery of the Boiling Lagoon" which brought back the diving suit and marker buoy.
My set is the Timeless Collection Wal Mart exclusive set from the early 2000's, which retains many of the elements of the original set, but is missing the marker buoy and rope, and the compass. The Map that comes with it is not the same as in the original, but is the generic map that many AT sets came with.
According to the the back of the box (don't know if this is the same story as in the mini comic that came with the old AT sets of the 70's?) GI Joe inherits an old desk from a dead relative and finds a treasure map hidden inside, he then goes off to find the treasure and runs afoul of an ornery octopuss.
Dang! I hate it when that happens don't you?
