Red Headed Stepchild

This is a pretty interesting figure. Most of the Timeless Collection AT sets came with a generic beardless, brown haired "Man of Action" figure. It was cool at first because the GI Joe Collector's Club, which was the only place doing AT reissue figures up until then, had yet to do a MOA reissue. So buying a Timeless Collection set gave someone like me, who was slowly building up my own Adventure Team from reissue figures a new teammate.

However it got old pretty quickly, who really needs THAT many Man of Action figures?

Wal Mart might be an evil mega corperation, but I have to hand it to them, they did a good job of differentiating their Timeless Collection exclusive AT set from those sold by other retailers around that time.

Someone cleverly decided to make this MOA figure a redhead, clever I say because it is an an obvious homage to the At's red headed Sea Adventurer.

In fact it's easy to imagine that this is simply meant to be a clean shaven or perhaps slightly more youthful version of the same character. The only thing that spoils this illusion are the minor details that the SA has brown eyes while this figure has blue ones, and his hair is a much brighter tone of red (a fact bemoaned by some collectors, yes, it is a tad on the "Ronald McDonald" side!).

This is the only official red headed MOA figure ever released by Hasbro, which makes him pretty unique.

Blonde haired versions are a well known variant, seemingly stemming from Hasbro having an overstock of the non-talking Astronaut figures from the "Spacewalk Mystery " set after it was discontinued and getting rid of the surplus by dressing them as MOAs and selling them in his box. However (to my knowledge) there are no reports of red headed MOAs being sold in the 70's, any ones you might see are therefore fan made kitbashes or are from this set.

Sadly, the white fabric this outfit is made from will yellow a bit if you keep it on display where there its exposed to sunlight.
